Winter Stillwater Strategy
Winter stillwater fishing is not about constant change. It’s about depth control, long pauses, and disciplined coverage.
Depth first, retrieve second
Choose a target layer (shallow margin, mid-water, deeper edge) and prove where your fly is. In winter, being off by one meter often means being off completely.
Read the wind
Wind creates lanes and gathers food. Use it to plan where to start, where to drift, and which bank gets the “push”.
Pause longer than feels right
Many winter takes happen during the pause. Build a rhythm: short pull → pause → micro movement → pause.
