How to Train When Fish Don’t Take
Days without takes are not “dead” days. They’re days without excuses. You can’t hide behind luck—only the process remains.
Stop using fish as the score
Fish are outcomes. Training is process. If you measure sessions only by fish, you learn from randomness. Measure decisions instead.
What to train (even with zero takes)
- Micro-zone reading (edges, seams, depth shifts)
- Drift quality and contact (where the fly really is)
- Decision discipline (10–15 casts per zone, then move)
A simple 60-minute training structure
- 10–15 min: observe, don’t fish
- 40 min: fish only 2–3 micro-zones with a plan
- 5 min: write one thing that worked, one mistake, one next change
